#SciFiJune Readathon and TBR Schedule

Hello to all good people out there.

Today I state my intention to sign up and participate a readathon aptly named Sci-Fi Summer Readathon.  This readathon runs the whole month of June and the star of the show is science fiction.  This readathon is put on every year by a sweet young lady named Michelle Miller.  She maintains a number of websites but the one we are focusing on today is www.seasonsreading.blogspot.com/.

I love this readathon because it highlights the type of books that I usually don't get around to reading or putting on my TBR.  This is the genre that got me interested in reading in the first place.  This and the mystery genre.  However, this month I am looking forward to a month long reading event of nothing but science fiction.. and fantasy.  Here is a small preamble for the readathon.

Sci-Fi Summer is a month long readathon! June 1st at 12:00 am EDT to June 30th 11:59 pm EDT.  Since science fiction is a very specific genre, this will be strictly reading science fiction during the event. However, since fantasy is so closely related to the genre (often grouped together), if you feel more comfortable reading fantasy, that is also fine. You do not have to participate for the entire readathon. You can start at the beginning and end early, or start later toward the end of the event. Just keep in mind that the last day to sign up is the last Friday before the end of the readathon at 11:59 pm eastern time.  And above all, this is a time of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries. So, no pressure...EVER! Enjoy!

If you have any inclination at all in joining, I'm telling you, that you should.  It is a very laid back readathon and there are so many nice people to meet to share the same interests as yourslelf.  There is still lots of time to join as the readathon does not start until June 1, 2022.  You can sign up here:

This is where I will be posting my progress on the books I am reading, as well as announcing my reading selection.  I will also be sending out twitter updates using the hashtag #scifijune.  So without any more hesitation, lets get on with the show!  My three picks are as follows:

I Just Joined The 55+ Club

Hello my friends and thank you for taking the time to read through this blog.  It has been almost exactly two years since I have posted on here.  I could blame it on alot of things like, COVID, or lack of time, or working too hard. But honestly, I think I was just in a huge slump, like the rest of the world.

I turned 55 a few days ago and my priorities have shifted a lot in 2 years.  Retirement and mortality are at the forefront of every thought I have.  I fought through COVID just weeks ago, and I am here to tell you, it is not something to be taken lightly. It is very scary to go through.  I was lucky to be one of the ones that made it, although I am still battling the scars from fighting it.

A few changes we have made in our life in the last two years is living more responsibly, more purposefully and to stop and enjoy the roses along the way.  It isn't easy.  It is almost a chore some days, but I know we are going to benefit from this way of living in the long run.  One of the changes we have made is to reduce the TV time we were addicted to.  There are many paths to leisurely pastimes I could have taken, but alas, I took the Netflix and streaming route. It was easy, took no effort on my part and I had comfort knowing that after work, I had a movie waiting at home for me, that was begging to be watched.  With only a finite amount of free time, my other love of live, reading, was rather aggressively shoved to the wayside.  At one point, I didn't think I would ever read another book again.

But, then slowly, my love for reading that I had, since I was but a child, started to be rekindled.  I am not sure I can put a finger on any one thing that started to ignite my passion for reading again, but I will tell you, it is back, and back with a hunger that I have never felt before in all my years of living. I started to go through all of the books that are laying on my shelf collecting dust...I looked at the hundreds of books on my e-reader, just waiting to be read.  I watched book-tubers, I read book review blogs, I read articles of the amazing books being written and some that are yet to come.  At first thought, it is daunting to know that I will never read all the books I want to read in my lifetime.  But then, to not even try to attempt to partake in what gives me so much joy in my life and leave it thrown in the attic gathering dust seems like such a waste to me.

Recently for my birthday, my loving family all pitched in and bought me the new Kobo Libra 2 e-reader.  E-reading has changed my life.  My old eyes aren't what they used to be and the benefits of e-reading are incredible.  The biggest benefits for me are the warm comfort back-lite, the ability to enlarge the fonts to your liking, and the connection to my local library to reserve and borrow books for free.  I just love my new Kobo.

Well, that's about enough of my rambling.  Thank you for spending time, and listening to my tales.  Sometimes, I think the art of listening and having conversations is all but lost.  Next post is about what the next month is going to bring and hopefully regular updates.  Until then, stay safe and be well.
